TIPM issue

Hello! I am hoping to get some help for my situation. My '07 Caliber has had the driver side low beam stop working, all other lights are fine. My local garage couldn't figure it out to fix it...sent me to his brother's Dodge dealership. There they figured that the TIPM was bad and needs replaced...to the tune of nearly $800.00!!! There is no way I can afford to get this fixed. Can such a thing as the TIPM be bought at a salvage yard and then installed at the garage? I am desperate to find a less expensive way to take care of this problem...got pulled over for it already! HELP!

Granny

P.S. I love my Caliber!

You could probably get it from the salvage yard, but try to reset it first. You can try the TIPM reset by disconnection the battery cables and touching them together for 20 minutes or so.

UPDATE: The TIPM/PCM Reset Procedure has been detailed for best results in this thread: http://www.caliberforumz.com/showthread.php?t=39192

I'm guessing that nobody has been messing with any of your electronics. If someone has tried to add lights, a different stereo or anything else electrical, this can cause the TIPM to shut down power to a circuit. Try the reset that Glenn said first. I'm sure you don't want to stand there and hold the battery cables together for twenty minutes, so a piece of duct tape will do the trick.

Hey thanks for the responses! Great forum! Wouldn't the dealer garage have tried the reset idea? I will try it anyway...but I would hope they at least tried that already. Dealer garage said there wasn't any recalls for my car...and I did call Chrysler and was told the same. And "no" I haven't done anything with the electrical system except try to change the bulb that is out. What about the AC plug...I've used it to run a lamp for about an hour and to charge my cell phone that's it.

Bulb you replaced probably shorted as it burned out. This caused the TIPM to turn the power off to that circuit. The dealership has some very stupid techs, or thought they found a sucker. Obviously you aren't a sucker because you came here to ask. As Glen stated, disconnect the cables from the battery and hold them together. It really should only require about 5 minutes. I recently reset my TIPM and got my rear wiper working again. Took less than 5 minutes for it to reset.

Listen to what Brad said. He knows his stuff!! Maybe you didn't get the correct headlight bulb the first time. Your owners manual should have the correct bulb number in it. If you don't have one, post back and I'll look in mine for it. It's in the car and I'm just too lazy to go and get it now.

The headlight bulbs are H13's.

There is no need to be afraid of disconnecting the battery
cables from their respective terminals.
Try the negative first to get the feel of the action,
the only things that change from a long disconnect
are the radio settings.
Make sure the car is OFF and key is out of ignition.

The only thing I might caution on is to be
careful you don't short the battery posts
together via your metal wrench, that is definitely a no no.
Undo the negative first then while you are working
on the postive side cover the negative terminal
with a DRY work towel then once you get the positive
off cover that post also.

Sorry I am just getting back to report how I made out... Well the battery cable idea didn't work. I finally saved up enough money to take it to the dealer, $890.00!! I still think this was a rip off, though! I do thank everyone who tried to help!

So what was the cause? And if out of warranty, why take it to the dealer?

I wonder if they even put a new TIPM in? My fogs weren't working, and trying to reset the TIPM did not work, but my mechanic was able to clear the codes and it fixed my problem.

BRAD! Thanks to you and Granny my driver side headlight now works!!! I had the exact same situation - I replaced the bulb, didn't work, auto tech told me it was a recall thing and by Googling 2007 Dodge Caliber TIPM, I found this forum, used your advice and am now a member. Y'all saved me a long drive and more frustration. I will check this forum from now on before I do anything to my Caliber.

Thank you and God Bless!

Hello all, I realise this is an old thread, but I have been following it, and doing what it says to rectify the problem.

I have a Dodge Caliber SXT 2007, CVT transmission with EVIC system, with a similar problem, but not to do with head lamps etc (all lights, wipers work fine). I still think it is to do with the TIPM.

The problems I am having are as follows:

- First noticed the problem when I couldn’t physically lock the doors to the car with the remote key fob. When you pressed lock, it seemed to register with the car, as the lights flashed, and when you open the door (as it physically doesn’t lock) the alarm would sound.
- Second thing I noticed is the petrol gauge is now constantly shown as empty, with the empty tank light on. I know it isn’t empty, as I just filled it up.
- Third thing, the compass, mpg reading, tire pressure gauge and external temperature gauge in now not working (this is shown in the one LCD gauge, interchangeable with the cluster button.)
- Fourth thing, the air-conditioning is no longer working.
- And final, the engine light is on. Ran a self-code check (ignition procedure) and only gave me .DONE. So no code is available.

I have done the reset procedure multiple times, to no avail.

Please could you let me know your thoughts on this? Before I strip out the TIPM and throw it as far as I can?

Your help is much appreciated!

Multiple indications are a sign of wiring loom failure - look for chaffing or insulation breaks.
If all ok clean and tighten the connections.

I have to agree with Aleks. You'll have to remove the battery, battery tray and driver side fender liner. This is a known problem area for the Calibers. For some reason, they made the wiring harness a little too short and it rubs the wires in the hole where it comes through the drivers side fender. Some times it will strip the insulation off the wires and you'll find a broken one. Other times the tension seems to break them inside the insulation and you have to figure out which one it is by process of elimination. You might luck out and find it by pulling on each wire on either side of where it goes through that hole. If it seems to stretch, you found it. Don't stop with just one. Check them all.

Thank you for your help, sorry I haven't responded sooner. I will definitely have a look under the battery/battery tray this weekend. Took it to a garage yesterday, and apparently it's to do with the CCN instrument cluster, lost communication with multiple things, so as you say, either wiring has split, or the instrument cluster itself has failed (which apparently is also a common issue?)
Anyways, will post back when I manage to get to the bottom of it. Thanks for you help!
