You may have some problems with Bill about the fronts.

Did you take a pic of your first attempt too?

Was it the Craigs guy you used and how did he clean the glass?
my first attempt didnt even get to the glass lol, i put the film on the outside to make sure fits etc..soaped up and peeled of backing film, about to put on and realised did he wrong side and put the tint back on backing film and just then a breeze came along and blew the tint onto itself and stuck to itself lol so threw it away and went to the pros lol! atleast i tried lol

craigs guy? i used the guy from gumtree if thats who u meant

I use to tint windows, trust me get it professionally done.
You need to heat shrink some parts and theres very little room for error.

What do you think about blacking out the pillars?

I bought some 3M flat black film one time and blacked out the B pillars on my Jetta, smooths out the lines of the car. Looked so much better. Easy to do.

I thought thats the way they do it Pete? I thought most cars are tinted dark, but the driver/passenger is tinted light...?

Chris - if you are asking about the UK; the law here is 100 forward (windscreen), 70% for the front sides (driver/passenger), and whatever you want for the rears.
You can drive on the mirrors as in a panel van so no requirements there.

The problem comes with the fronts. Official view is they do not like anything and roadside tests include a light meter to measure that 70% of ambient light is passing through.
Regular clear auto-glass will stop some (5-7%) of light on it's own just from physical properties. Specialists do make a 75% tint for legal applications. The complication is that most modern auto glass is solar that stops some sunlight (10-15%), adding any tint would fail the light test. That is why any tint on fronts will lead to a roadside inspection. If you fail to pass 70% of light they give you a Fix caution AND tear off a strip of the film to ensure you do it. Otherwise it's a fixed penalty £60 and 3 points on the drivers license.

Naturally if you are in any side impacts with front tints here the insurance company would claim you had contributory negligence.

Pre cut film are cheaper, but it's a pretty hard work to do it by yourself ... anyway I'm sure that someone of our members did it and will give you some good advice soon.
