I've been searching for tips and how-tos for removing the underbody air dam (first step in replacing the alternator). I believe it is held in place with some kind of special plastic anchors, and I would like to learn how to remove those without breaking any. Could anyone give me some tips?

Thanks

We have a free download of the service manual in our "Manuals" forum section. Removal of the alternator is from underneath and is made easier by removing the front wheel and wheel well. Fasteners are removed by prying the center pin head out. The service manual will give you all the specifics. Removal of the air dam is not required.
Are you replacing ac and serpitine belt, water pump and radiator flush while you are there?

I'm reading from page 1140 in the service manual (8F-37), the fourth step is to "remove underbody air dam". Step five is to remove the "accessory drive splash shield, which I assume is the wheel well you mentioned.

Those fasteners have been giving me fits. I'm trying not to break any, so I thought I'd ask if there were any special techniques (or even tools) that would help the process.

I'm not sure why I would need to do any of that...

Have a look at the tail light replacement thread, they are the same pins.

Technically they should be replaced and a pack of 40 online is a handful of dollars.

You can pry the pin up with a screwdriver then long nose pliers to pull. Once the pin is out a knife will lever up the body.

Most break by snapping off the pin head. If the head has already gone screw in a small tapping screw and rotate that out.

On reassembly some coppagrease makes future removal easier.
I'd just remove the front bumper cover. Would give more space
