Transmission Oil Cooler

441 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Ammar_AKK
I have a 2011 Dodge Caliber SE 2.0L CVT, I was shopping for a transmission filter and realized from the listings that there are two filters not one, the bottom one for the transmission fluid, and the upper one for transmission Oil Cooler, but the confusing part is my car’s Oil cooler is a little bit different, and it has only two lines instead of four, mine’s like that: [4872709AA Valve-Cooler Bypass], and the pictures I found online are for: [Auxiliary Transmission Oil Cooler 68025160AA].
My question is what difference does it make, and if it makes a difference is it possible to replace mine with a cooler like the second one or not, and does my type of vehicle have an oil cooler filter too or only a transmission fluid filter.
Thanks.

I watched a YouTube video a while back where a mechanic was replacing the transmission.

The two were different with these cooler filter locations, just as you noticed.

Nice, he mentioned something about it being equipped for towing.
Looks like mine has a filter too, I haven’t replaced it the first time I did a fluid change🤦🏻‍♂️ didn’t know about it, not to mention that they told my father at the dealership the transmission is German and doesn’t need a fluid change since it has a lifetime fluid 😂, I’ve replaced the fluid when I got the car for the first time at 107,000 Km (~66,500 Miles) 😅.
Thanks @672aq, I appreciate it.

They both work

don't think you'll find an answer about the filter without looking at an existing one. Looks like the oil line connections are different so maybe best to stick with what you've got.
The oil cooler tubes could get clogged so maybe why they by-passed it

Yep, looks like I might stick with what I got, regarding the filter, from the video @672aq attached, looks like both types have the filter, I’ll need to check it to be sure. I hope the o-ring can be sold separately since in all of the diagrams I’ve seen, the o-ring comes together with the Valve-Cooler Bypass Valve / Oil Cooler.

Thanks, I’ve just searched for the number you shared #31526-1XMOA, and found this article about it too, regarding a Jeep Patriot.
I’ll have to visit Nissan/Mitsubishi parts stores & see if the filters & the gasket are available.
Update, I bought the parts needed, Cooler Bypass Valve filter & gasket, transmission filter & gasket, Amsoil CVT fluids.
As I mentioned before, the Cooler Bypass Valve filter hasn’t been changed ever, the car’s mileage is 147,000km (~91,351 miles) so I needed to change the filter, and I also found broken threads for one of the transmission filter bolts since I changed the oil at a workshop last time.
I tried to screw it. but it just kept spinning 🥲, I had to add some thread locker and put it back.
I will provide photos of the old & new oil cooler filters, old & new transmission filters, and the broken threads.
