Replace engine

Hi everyone,

I an new to the forum, kinda looking for some answers. I have a 2007 calibre with a 1.8 engine.. the engine is now knocking and has to be replaced. I have been having some issues finding a replacement since 1.8 are not as common as 2.0. My question is can you replace a 1.8 with a 2.0? Do i have to replace everything or will it fit?

My thoughts are that a 2.0 should be a straightforward fit mechanically.
Not sure about the computer.

What happened to yours ?
I am not quite sure, was having problems with injectors and o rings, (I know nothing about cars by the way). I had it to my mechanic and he was in the ordering the parts, told me the car was okay to drive.. It started making noise when accelerating and I brought it back. Apparently it run dry of oil, was full last week when I checked. The car is still working but making awful noise, He says I need new engine.. Unfortunately I cannot find a second hand one. New one was worth more than the car.. I can find alot of 2.0 liter

Hard to imagine that in 1 week you would not notice signs
such as oil in the driveway or on the gararge floor or again
at least the idiot light in the dash.
Possibly your "mechanic" is the one who is responsible for
no oil although to check injectors would have nothing to do
oil.
Trade it-6 yrs old not worth the money.
Actually no system lights came on at all.. No indication. No oil on the ground and I only drove it about 15 kms. I would have noticed the oil on ground since their is snow.. I really had no indiction at all. No warning lights or anything.
Did you actually check the oil with the dipstick?
Also can you post a sound video so we can hear it?

Side note - a failing alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump can make quite a racket.

I'd go for a second opinion at a different shop. (your first mechanic might be a "shyster")
Bad alternators can sound HORRIBLE. I ran across a lady about two months ago who's Caliber sounded like it was about to fly apart. Her mechanic said she had serious internal engine problems... To prove a point, I followed her home, removed her serpentine belt and fired up the car. No horrid noise. I told her her alternator was almost certain to be the problem.

Saw her diving around last week, the car sounded quiet enough driving by me!
I agree with Dave and James about taking it to a COMPETENT mechanic. Sounds to me like someone is trying to get a chunk of money out of your wallet without actually earning it.

Or getting you to pay for a mistake his shop made!!
