"Dodge - this has gone beyond sounds. Surely a recall is due. If members are experiencing broken pads this is a NHTSA safety issue."

Aleks posted the above on another thread in this section.

The NHTSA normally does not get involved in car problems, they will get involved if a car problem appears to be the cause of some accudents.

They will suggest a "voluntary recall" of vehicles that have been involved in safety incidents, and evidence suggests something about these incidents is related to some design or component deficiency.

They will mandate a recall if a specific problem has been proven to be a safety hazard.

On occasion, a carmaker might issue their own recall to deal with some problem that a particular line of vehicles is having.

Unless these cracked brake pads can be linked to some number of collisions, the NHTSA won't get involved.

Key word here is "if". If the NHTSA were notified of collisions related to brake pad failure - there would be a recall "lickety -split".
They get copies of all TSB's, to monitor car problems that might develop into safety problems. No action will be taken by NHTSA unless this develops into something NHTSA deems to be a safety issue.
