Brendy, LNM, I've not been back in the UK in well over two decades. Back then my personal ride was a cookie cutter Fiat... what does sell there now a days? I'm curious

Looks like Chrysler is taking honors at the bottom of the pile. At least Ford got away from the Valencia series of engine... tough but slower than a slug! I'm surprised to see diesel fueled vehicles losing ground... then again, the gassers aren't as bad on gas as they once were.
Thank you!! :)

The Ford Zetec engine technology came from Yamaha and is built at Valencia and Bridgend Wales. The earlier engine series may have been Kent.

Diesels are gaining ground. Sorry if there was a lack of clarity as the number format options on this Forum are lacking.

UK Diesels share in Jan 08 was 44.9%. In Jan 09 up to 45.6%.

The new Audi crossover is one example where mileage is better on the gas engine.

The price of diesel in the UK is now approx 12p a litre more than the price of petrol, so a lot of people are starting to realise that by the time they pay a premium to buy the diesel engined model in the first place, higher fuel costs and often more regular servicing costs, that you have to do a pretty high mileage to start make the saving in fuel ecomony worth while and so many are opting for the cheaper petrol engined cars.

Nice find Aleks ... I'm not a fan of little cars but I like the look of the new Fiesta.

But tell me please why do you say GM Corsa , Astra, Vectra, Insigna ... and the website says Vauxhall
Corsa , Astra, Vectra, Insigna??? Is it not Opel ?

Your right Licia, these cars are marketed in the UK under the Vauxhall badge and in Europe under the Opel badge, but both brands are owned by GM

I knew that Opel was owned by GM, but I didn't know they were marketed under the Vauxhall badge there ... Thanks LNM
My friend has a Opel Corsa ... I'll tell her that she can call it
Vauxhall Corsa now :D

No problem Licia,

Initially the vauxhall cars were marketed under different names, such as the Vauxhall Astra was the same as the Opel Kadett, but I believe there was a standardisation of names a while ago.

There was a period a few years ago when there was an influx of Opels over here as the UK public woke up to the fact they were paying more for basically the same car with a Vauxhall badge!

Maybe Opel will not be GM much longer ... The way General Motors developed and grew was by acquiring other car companies. Vauxhall in the UK and Opel in Germany.
As a contrast Ford established it's own operations from scratch building the tin lizzies (Model T).
After the 2nd fuel crisis in the 1970s both Ford and GM closed their UK car design centres and standardised on the German models. Before that time it was possible to buy a German Ford Taunus, 17M, or 20M model, as well as a US Ford Mustang or Australian Ford Fairmont or Galaxie. The German Opels also did well here with the Rekord, Commodore, Kadett and Manta. The Australian Holden Monaro was sold here sometimes with a Vauxhall badge.

The last big Vauxhall factory builds the Astra in Ellesmere Port and has run out of cash.

Not a clue about this so I've to ask... if GM spins Opal off, isn't Opal solvent enough to survive on its own or.......????
Its a difficult one to call - the sales figures would indicate that Vauxhall are doing pretty well in the UK, so presumably Opel are also selling comparable numbers in europe. So you'd think they could survive. However, we are hearing a lot on the news just now about difficulties with Vauxhall and how much trouble they are in.

At a news conference Tuesday 24th Feb, GM Chairman Rick Wagoner said almost everything is under consideration as the automaker restructures its far-flung global operations that also are suffering in a worldwide economic crisis. He refused, for instance, to rule out a possible sale of its Adam Opel Germany automaking subsidiary, which GM has owned since 1929. But Wagoner said it won't consider selling its Chinese auto operations.

"We think China is really fundamental to our future," Wagoner said.

This morning's news, Opal employees are protesting against GM for plant closings... yeah, looks like this one is becoming another sinking reality.
