NEW 09 Caliber problems at 900 miles!!!!!

I just purchased a 2009 Caliber SXT Sport with a 5 spd. I had to drive around 125 miles to the dealership to get the one I wanted. Options aside...I drove home the 125 miles, and got more and more excited about the vehicle. I was loving the chill zone, and still love how smooth the ride is. Here is where I start to question the vehicle.

I have only had the vehicle three weeks. As I hit 900 miles the interior lights stop working. The only lights that work are the instrument lights. The a/c controls aren't visible, and the dome will not come on. I have worked on cars for 18 years and have never seen this before. I pulled every fuse and not a one was blown. I disconnected the battery, both terminals, for 15 minutes to reset the TIPM, and nothing. So I got in the car today to bring it to the dealership and the air wouldn't work for the leg ducts. I get to the dealership, spend three hours waiting, and they tell me the car needs a new computer!!!

900 miles is what I have put on the car, and it needs a new computer already??? This had better be a fluke. On top of that, the air ducts started working again even though the dealership did nothing to check it. Now I have to drop the car off for three days so that they can scan the computer and send the info to the manufacturer, so they can flash the memory and send the new computer. This is crazy. Reliability is seriously in question here. Can't wait to find out what goes on from here.

So for the good part: I took my Caliber on a round trip of 500 miles to NYC and back. On the highway, with the cruise control on at 75, I got 32 miles per gallon. A nice improvement from my 99 Explorer 4x4 at 14mpg. My only complaint about my Caliber is the acceleration. IT SUCKS. It has consistently received failing marks about this. However, it keeps me out of speeding trouble. On the highway, hit the gas and you will gradually climb. At 12.8 seconds to get to 60mph, this has to be the slowest vehicle I have ever driven. To top that, I had a 1994 Ford Probe that had 97 horsepower and 257,000 miles when I got rid of it. 2.0 four cylinder, 5 spd, and that would smoke this car. I do love the smoothness of the ride. Enough talk about the acceleration though.

I do enjoy my new vehicle, and want to find out if this is a fluke glitch, or if this is going to happen again. Since I notice that most of you have older models, I will give updates as often as I can. New for 09: no awd option (this is horrible), and some of the interior options have changed. I just wish that the vehicle either got better mpg for its speed, or better speed for its mpg.

I had an SXT 5speed before the SRT and I too complained about the lack of acceleration. I didn't even attempt to pass people, if they wanted to be jerks and give it a bit, I would be lost in the dust. Hence why I got the SRT. :) Now I leave everyone else in the dust.

I was getting 32mpg with the SXT and I get 26mpg with the SRT. Not a bad trade off if you ask me.

I hope your computer issue is just a fluke. If not and you continue to have more problems, I would demand an extended warranty at no cost.
I also have a 5 speed 1,8 L 09 SXT and I find the comments about lack of passing ability interesting because my experience has been just the opposite. 3 rd gear shows just about 5,000 RPM's at 65 mph and I find when passing slower cars on a two lane road that a quick drop to third, floor it and that's all it takes for a safe pass. Maybe if I was trying to pass cars that are doing 80 or 90 it might be an issue But frankly I don't drive at much more than 5 -10 miles over the speed limit.

I'm just wondering, did you guys down shift to third before passing or actually kept it in 5th gear?

By the way, I hope the computer issue is resolved quickly. I had an issue with a loose ground on mine but it was quickly and satisfactorily solved
I have the slow c.v.t. I thought the 5 speed manual transmissioned Caliber would be faster. I average 9.7 seconds for my 0 to 60 times. I have a few mods. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjBJDAfv0Tk

I did drop it down to third. Most of my passing is highway, 100km-120km/h. I could pass ppl but if they wanted to be jerks and speed up... I would get stuck and not be able to pass. Know what I mean??

But in my SRT, i can leave it in 6th, yes 6th and still smoke anyone who is trying to be a douche. ;)

:shy:

Hehe. I do that all the time. if only for the nice deep growl.

And when the douches get more cocky, I drop it in 5th.
Drop it to 4th and floor it for passing on the highway - word of advice ... hang on tight. :naughty:

LOL yeah have done that... torque steer kicks in and I think I am about to die... but it is super fun! LOL!!! :Racing:
i had purchased my 07 caliber sxt and had nothing but problems with the dam thing from my windows to tie rods and brakes and i recently bought a 09 honda civic lx and i love it....it actually has a transmission in it and not that cvt crap

You've only been with us for 2 months and no mention before of these issues. If you have replaced the Cali with a Civic have you moved on?
I have an 09 SXT Sport 5 spd that I bought when the 09's first came out back in September 08'. So far 19,500km on it and not a single problem other than the ****ty ass acceleration but that is live-able because it keeps me from driving fast anyhow.

But with the thought that only 1% of all sales in 09 was a 1.8L w/ 5 spd means your re sale is going to suck ass and it really sucks for me because I need a bigger car or an SUV or Van soon because I am having a second child and this caliber is not big enough for a full family.

Interesting on the acceleration because I find my Caliber 09 SXT with 5 speed perfectly adequate for normal highway driving. It accelerates on the freeway on ramp about as well as my Son's Corolla or My daughters Versa (Both with automatics). I find that the power curve for the 1.8 puts HP and torque way up in revs so if you downshift to 3rd ( which is good to 75 + MPH) there is plenty of merging/ passing power (for my style of driving anyway). Obviously the Caliber is no Porsche but then again, I don't think those puppies sell for the price of a Caliber either.

If your style of driving calls for laying down rubber from the stoplight then you may be right - I don't like to buy tires any more often than I absolutely have to so I haven't tested acceleration from a standstill.
Mine has the "dreaded" CVT automatic. The CVT does just fine accelerating in traffic, but it can feel a bit hairy doing a high speed highway merge.
If yours has difficulty merging off ramps then you have a
problem.Mine will accelerate like a banshee, end of a short ramp
doing 75-80 mph in no time at all.
I have had it 100 mph a couple of times.

I agree with bigstr on this... I have the 2.0 SXT and CVT and my car also accelerates like crazy until 80 mph (then I back off - haven't had it higher than that yet). It just sounds different than a regular automatic transmission.
Maybe some CVTs were "programmed" differently at the factory in the earlier vehicles???
I have absolutely no qualms about passing cars at 55-65 mph on the freeway.
My car is a blast to drive around town or highway riding.
Just my 2 cents worth here.
Not complaining, just when you need to do some "panic acceleration" like squeeze in behind a car that is going 10 mph slower than you, but the car you are going to cut off to get in front of is going 10 mph faster than you, and an 18 wheeler is right on your tail going faster than all of you put together. That's "life in the big city"
Note to bigtsr - If you live anywhere near Toronto - you probably know what I mean, I've been there several times - driving is just like in Philly.
I don't do as much expressway as I used to but the QEW
8 lanes wide runs right thru the center of my city so I use it
as a cross town shortcut often so I do know the situations
you can find yourself in suddenly.I have never had the Caliber
fail me when the gas pedal hits the detent and out of economy mode.
You have to learn to ignore the 6000 rpm showing on the tach
and let the software/CVT do its thing.Lower speeds below 50 mph
I have no qualms about yanking it down to "L" for added zip.
It has never failed me, just feels like it is giving its all, but I need more
I have no issues with the acceleration, or lack thereof. One just needs to aware of the limitations of the car. I have the CVT with the Autostick which gives me the flexibility to chose a ratio, and that helps.

I just drive the speed limit or go with the traffic flow.
I agree, the CVT is great with the autostick. It gives you all the flexibility you need.
