I’m trying to figure out if my lug nut is damaged or not. When I was loosening it counter-clockwise it started to loosen, but then tightened after a few rotations. I tried to turn it clockwise and it moved a little bit then tightened. That lug nut is also a bit rusty. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

If it's an open lug nut (ie: it's like a regular nut you put on a bolt) instead of being a capped lug nut, or you have capped lug nuts and moisture got into them, rust on the lug itself can cause the nut to not come off easily. Best thing to do is apply some penetrating oil to the stud if you can, then just work the nut back and forth maybe 1/4 turn at a time until it comes off. Loosen 1/4 turn, tighten it back up, then loosen it 1/2 turn, tighten it back up, etc. Be sure to clean the lug with a wire brush really well once the nut is off.
