If (like the OP) this noise didn't start until you replaced the alternator then the alternator is likely the culprit. Remanufactured alternators are notoriously problematic and you can go through a few brand new ones before finding one that actually works. Given how difficult it is to change them on a Caliber, buy a brand new name brand alternator (Denso makes one I believe...IIRC Mitsubishi was the OEM supplier) with the decoupling pulley already installed and call it a day.

First thought is that you have a failing wheel bearing...the often start growling when they go bad. Drive down an empty road and weave side-to-side...if you hear the noise change when you turn the steering wheel to one side but not the other, it's almost certainly a bad bearing.

If that doesn't help then drive down an empty road, then put the car into neutral and coast. This will allow the engine to drop down to idle speed while the car is still moving fast. If the noise changes, then it's something to do with the powertrain.
