okay so i heard something rattling on my 2008 2.0L caliber. i walked to the back of the car where the rattle was strong looked by the evap can and notis this heat shield on top of the muffler rattling away i touched it it was cold and pulled it out like nothing. i see 4 bolt hole and they looked like aged and cracked on the hole. i guess it just fell off is their any downfall to not having it on ? will something blow up? is it important or should i just leave it alone. i mean it does not rattle anymore which is a plus.

I had the same issue and did the same thing, about a year ago. No problems, yet.

The heat shield is there for a reason but it's not uncommon for the ones welded to the cat to break off our the large aluminum shield that runs above the muffler pipes to rot at its bolt points and become loose. IMHO if it were me (and it has been) I found ways to reattach them.

My ‘07 SXT muffler heat shield did the same, it was held in place by 4 body nuts. I just removed the nuts and put large body washers under them and reinstalled the shield. Simple cheap fix!
