ADMIN NOTE: This is old info. More recent info is available. You can, with the transmission at ambient temperature and engine not running, use the engine dipstick to check the fluid level. Just clean the dipstick well before using it. Remove the air intake/battery cover to access the CVT dipstick tube. Fluid level is good if it falls within the "safe zone" markings.

Hello, I have a 2007 Caliber 2.0L with a CVT. I would like to check the transmission fluid level and take a look at the condition. Seems I can't find the dip stick, if there i one, and the owners manual says to "let a qualified mechanic" check it. What;s the deal with this? There must be a way to check it. Anybody know how? Thanks, Nouerid
So I don't need to buy the special dipstcik? Why is it longer than the engine oil dip stick?

The transmission dipstick is designed to bottom out, so you are measuring from the bottom up, not from the top of the tube down. If that's not clear it will make sense when you do it. The one NAPA sells is really long, like 2 feet more than you need.

I haven't tried the oil dipstick method, but if you do you can measure for yourself where the marks are from the tip in millimeters and check against the chart. (and obviously make sure it it long enough to solidly bottom out.)

The NAPA (dorman) dipstick has basically a brass ruler marked in mm at the end. Worth the 25 or so in my opinion.

You probably already figured it out but the oil dipstick wont be long enough to bottom out. You hear a distinctive ting sound. I had to use the dipstick out of my 97 chev pickup.
So at ambient temp the fluid should be somewhere between say 28 to 37 mm ?
Engine light came on for a bit in my sons car obdii said it was tranny fluid level.

The oil dipstick method "safe zone" reading is well over the 28-38mm reading I would get with the required specialty dipstick. But even at 28-38mm thats only 1.5 inches for 7 quarts of fluid. Doesnt seem to all fall into place size and height of liquid. Anyone else have anymore advice on this or if the oil dipstick is an accurate method even though it wouldnt match up to a bottomed out dipstick? I had also read there is a side plug you can pull and fill till it flows out which is about 1.5" above the bottom of the pan has anyone done that method. Im not looking to change just fill as I had to replace a transmission cooler due to accident and lost some of my fluid.
