Hi guys I own a 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT with the CVT transmission.. The other day my car clunked out.. I think it might be in LIMP mode..

When I start the car all the (PRNDL) lights will display with boxes around each one and the transmission temp light flashes.

does anyone know what would cause this? BAD TCM? bad range sensor?

I was thinking it was the TCM because I got fault codes,

U0101 (lost communication with TCM [transmission control module])
this code makes me think the tcm is screwed because I already checked all the connections.

U0402 (Implausible data recieved from tcm)
however this code leads me to believe its a range sensor or a pressure solenoid switch... that would send erratic signals to the TCM and then the TCM passes them onto the PCM (powertrain control module) which throws this code..

would low transmission fluid cause this ?

anyone else ever experience this before?

thanks again, Tim!

It's been reported before. The cause was due to damaged wires in the harness going to the CVT.

checked all wires, none are damaged.
Are you sure? The ones at issue are inside a protective sheath near where it connects to the CVT. It requires getting under the car to get to it.

Couldn't hurt to try this;
From my previous post on 11/30 codes P0700 & P0708
My daughter complained the vehicle died, would restart & feel sluggish. Trans. gear indicator had all P R N D circled. Was told trans. &/or module was bad. This is what I did and it works just fine to this day (knock on wood) Take about 15 minutes-

Try removing the neutral safety switch (below battery) - disassemble (8>10 screws) - clean contacts (keep in disassembled position because of springs with slider contacts) - I had to scrape contacts with a screwdriver to remove glaze - Clear codes & test drive
The switch sends gear position to the computer as well as neutral safety & reverse lights.

Hello Tim,

Were you ever able to fix your issue?

I am getting the stored fault code U0402. I have had reduced engine power come up twice.
The first time it happened at low speed, all the (PRNDL) lights displayed with boxes around each one and the transmission temp light flashes. It then went away and the engine light went away after a few hours.
The second time, I had reduced engine power for about 2 seconds 3 days later without an engine light.

I have a 2009 with 102,000 miles.

Thanks

Trans temp light on and will not go out even after cool down.

Hello everyone. I live in MI and own a 2007 Caliber that has been pretty good to me until last Thursday, when my wife was driving the car and it went into limp mode in a BUSY intersection. She managed to drive it to a close parking lot and found the trans over temp and check engine light on.
I removed the negative battery cable thinking this may clear the codes but no luck. I had the car towed home because I have been a wrench for most of my life, figured I could fix this and proceeded to search the Internet for answers.

I had two codes U0101 and U0402lost communication with the TCM. I noticed there is a lot of questions and suggestion of what could be wrong but not many answers. So I found this post and took the suggestion of checking the wire harness because the Trans temp light never went out even after it cooled down, so I figured maybe a bad sensor or electrical issue.
I removed the inner drivers side fender well and did a little inspecting but did not find anything obvious.
I then removed the trans drivers side splash cover and to my surprise part of the protective sheath was worn and could see a damaged wire with some corrosion. I removed the sheath and found the wire had corroded in half and hoped this was the issue. After cutting out the bad piece of wire on both ends I soldered a new piece of wire using shrink wrap to protect the repair. I cleared the codes and the lights stayed off and excitingly put the wheel back on and test drove the car.
It was fixed and what a relief. I have included some pictures. I put the car all back together and it has been fine for the past few days.

Sorry to say with 92,000 miles and this lucky find I think I am going to trade it in. At least here is an answer to my issue and hope this helps others.

Hi Newbie:

I am having the same exact problem in my '07 Caliber... Might you be able to tell me where the trans drivers side splash cover is more precisely?

TY :)

I have the same problem now. Transmission has a problem. Can not drive faster than 20mph. Codes U0101 and U0402 and transmission overheat light on. I tried to check wires. Did not find any of them damaged.

I had the save exact issue. Your solution was right on as my cable bundle was found chaffed against the car body. I repaired the 2 broken wires and am back on the road. A 1 hour fix. Thanks.
