Hi Everyone,
As you'll see by my info, I'm new to this forum. I'm really hoping someone here can help me, I don't know what else to do. I posted once and it appears to have been lost in the shuffle as I only got 1 response.

Ok, 2007. SXT trim, 2.0 engine. 93,900 miles. CVT transmission. I am the original owner. Around 3 weeks ago I noticed a "whirring" coming from the front of my car. I'd say engine but I don't know that it's actually the engine. I just know it's up front. At first, it was only noticeable upon deceleration when the tachometer drops from the 2 into the 1 and below. Now I can hear it when accelerating and decelerating. The only time I don't really notice it is while maintaining speed. It sounds like a top winding down if that makes sense? Or kind of like a plane landing. The car still makes the noise when in Neutral.

I took it to my mechanic. According to him, it is not the alternator, the decoupler pulley (which was replaced approximately 2 years ago so I know that noise), the battery, the engine or anything that may just need tightened. I replaced the battery anyway because it was 8 years old. Still doesn't help. I've actually had it in his shop twice, he was kind enough to humor me and double check the alternator after I found another video with what I thought was the same noise. He took the belt off the alternator and it made no difference in the noise. Last week, he dropped the pan on the transmission and gave it a complete flush. Nothing of significance was found.

The only conclusion he can come to is transmission but the car doesn't behave as though it has a transmission issue. It is 13 years old, so that's not out of the realm of possibilities. However, I still have less than 100k miles on it. That seems low for transmission failure. Other than is, the car is in GREAT shape. When I had it inspected in July, the same mechanic told me how nice my car still was and he could see me being able to keep it another 5 years, easy.

I'm going to provide a link for the video of the sound the car is making. If you guys could check it out, I would be beyond grateful. I apologize for the somewhat poor quality, my phone isn't the greatest. The sound I'm referring to starts at about the 3 second mark, and goes until the end. If it is the transmission, does it require an entire replacement or is it something that can be fixed? https://youtu.be/rXiFaZroW3Y You'll have to turn the volume up, it isn't a loud noise. I just know my car isn't supposed to make that noise.

Budget is a concern. I'm not willing to put more than $500(ish) into the car. It's KBB value is only $1500-$2100. I would REALLY like to avoid getting a new car. So if there is a reasonable fix, I'm more than willing to do it.

Thank you all in advance!

Will it only make the noise while driving? Or can you sit in your driveway in neutral, rev up the engine and still hear the noise. If it seems more related to engine RPM and it is not one of the driven accessories (Power Steering Pump, AC Compressor, water pump, etc.) then maybe it has something to do with the timing chain? Just spit-balling some ideas.

I don't know about neutral, but I did try it in park a couple weeks ago. Revved the engine up to where the noise is and nothing happened. I'll try it in neutral though, thank you.

If it's the timing chain, do you know how intensive of a repair that would be?

It would be cheaper and easier to just change the engine. These things are dime a dozen in yards all around North America.
