So, with the winter impending and it being my first winter in something other than a long wheel base, low to the ground sedan, I am thinking that it will happen this year. I have taken my sedans off road, mudding, and bouncing through snow drifts well above my car. I have never had to be towed out, only gotten stuck a few times but some rocking and spinning of the wheels I got out. Take my poll, I am curious if anyone has gotten their caliber stuck.

Well, I do have AWD so even with all-seasons, my Caliber did well in slippery conditions provided I use AutoStick.
This is my second winter season with the Caliber (bought it in february last year so I did get some snow time) so I'm having real winter tires (and black steel rims) put on this thursday. Then, I'm expecting it'll act like a tank! And break too!

All Wheel Drive R/T performed amazingly well even with the factory firestones. Can't fathom I'll have problems this season with Pirelli Scropion A/Ts!! (Yes, I'm psyched, can you tell??)
For reference, I had a '93 Isuzu Trooper LS which was replaced by the Caliber and still own a '96 Trooper Limited. I like my Caliber better in the snow than the Trooper! AWD is where it's at.

I am starting to consider my winter tires. The tires that will be on the car when I pick it up will be 225/45-19 summer performance. I will need winter tires immediately (as in, that day) and was thinking of going with Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25's.
I was wondering if I should stay with the same size tire, go thinner (perhaps 205-215) or wider 245? TireRack claims that thinner tires are better. This is Seattle, so there is mainly ice and not so much snow, so here I am thinking that wider may be better.
When I go to configure tires there, they recommend 225/50-18s (at $179) but this means that I need to go with new wheels (cha-ching).
If I stay with 19s, they are $222 each (but I need to swap the mounting on the factory wheels). In overall cost, this is probably the best way to go including the expense to get them changed out.
What does it usually cost to get a set of tires changed out on the same wheels?
Does anyone have any thoughts on/experience with this?

I'm picking up my new winter tires + rims tomorrow.
I'm going from 215/55/R18 down to 215/65/R16.
18" rim winter tires are nowhere to be found in my area and they cost WAY too much on order.
DON'T use rims smaller than 16" on the Caliber. Your disk breaks wont like it.
All prices are in REAL dollars (and by that I mean Canadian Dollars!!!!! Muhaha... hem... about time we reverse that joke...)
EDIT: in north America, these tires are marketed as General Tires Altimax Arctic (http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/ca/en/generaltire/automobile/themes/pass_car/broadmarket/altimax_arctic/master_en.html).

Michlin Ice 215/65/R16 & rims > $823 + Taxes Last year at Costco. (Free tire swap for life) Slightly smaller than my original 18, but happy with them. I prefer having my own spare rims, I usually do the swap myself in my garage, no lines, no loading tires and about 2 hours faster than if I went to a garage.

I'll be having FUN driving in the snow as soon as I'm done brushing the accumulated snow and slush (oh... also have to de-ice the wipers and headlamps), after having done the same thing earlier today to bring the kids to school.

I lived in the south after living in the north and was looking forward to no snow. Well, now I am back in Minnesota and not looking forward to it. We have some here, it is only sticking to the roads. Was enough to make it slick out, and either it was extremely slick last night, or I am going to be the odd one out at how this car handles in the snow. I tapped my brakes last night and ended up sideways on the road. It felt like it handled more like my moms cavalier she had before the caliber. I guess I am just used to a car that is only 4 inches off the ground, has a wheel base a foot longer, is wider, and heavier.

I'm hopeful that the sarcastic (and jealous) tone of my previous reply didn't offend anyone.
Anyhow, just got back from my garage with new tires and DaRk-EvIl rims. I've linked to pics bellow.
The tires are branded Altimax Arctic (http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/ca/en/generaltire/automobile/themes/pass_car/broadmarket/altimax_arctic/master_en.html) by General Tire. They are the same tires as the Gislave Nordfrost (http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/se/se/gislaved/automobil/aemnen/personbilsdaeck/vinter/nordfrost_3_se/master_nordfrost_3_se.html), a brand that also belongs to the Continental group (confirmed with thread comparaison).
They are rivet-able but I wont need that here. I selected them because they were highly-rated and cheaper than the only higher-rated tire in test results made by a local consumer association group in a joint report with a major newspaper around here:
http://homepage.mac.com/mouser/photos/caliber/tires/test_results.jpg
EDIT: Columns are, in order: Rank, Brand, Model, Driving, Breaking, Slalom, Changing lane, side G force, driving noise, drivability.
(Excuse my french! I took this off some forum somewhere)
Because of their size, I'm not in-lining the images:

Tire close-up (http://homepage.mac.com/mouser/photos/caliber/tires/IMG_1893.JPG)
When I left home, I was slipping a bit and the rear was sometimes spinning out (AWDs do that).
On my way back, it was awesome the difference it made. MUCH shorter breaking distance, firmer launch (at last I can out-launch lesser cars... even with the CVT...) and much easier handling in corners. I could feel them tires biting down the surface.
Totally awesome tires.
YOU FOLKS DOWN SOUTH ARE MISSING OUT!!
All right. Time to go clean up the garage and make room for the car... I dont want to brush up the car every morning...

I'm doing the Cali tonight, winter tires always make the difference.
I've got aggressive AT tires on my Xterra (most people think they are my winter tires)... I was slipping everywhere, at least I know my ABS works, felt like a foot massager. Swapped for my real winter duelers, traction is now there and haven't felt the ABS yet.
caliberseforme
11-22-2007, 04:55 PM
So you must not have ABS?
I have a manual transmission, and no ABS. I haven't had ABS in 3 years though. My last Concorde didn't have ABS and it was just fine in the snow, unless I really stomped on the brakes, I never had a problem with them locking up on me. I actually liked not having ABS, and I didn't have traction control on that one either, and I liked it. Though I found that using the Autostick and starting in 3rd gear was perfect for the steep hills in Duluth. My first concorde had abs and traction control, I think I turned the traction control off more times than I left it on.

Except for waking up to the first day of spring.
Out here in WA we get a lot of black ice. When we lived in NH we got a LOT of snow. After several snow storms in a row it takes its toll on you. Now I can drive to the mountains if I really miss it.

Bargain doesn't end there.
I ended up paying 45$ea for the 16"rims. I was told 50$, and the closest runner up was 57$ (dealer was 63$).
Now, what ticks me (but I knew about that) is the tire pressure electronic valves.
When I enter the garage, the car sees it's tires and reinitializes it's monitoring. When I leave, system complains again with 3 beeps and eventually turns off the low tire pressure warning.
I might actually move my rims in the backyard shed to avoid that but it doesn't feel safe. I'd have to lock 'em down.

Doesn't the TPMS "bind" to the sensors in its tires? Check to see if there is a computer (driver info system) option to reinitialize. You do have TPM sensors in the new tires, right? Of course, do this away from your garage or any other vehicle for that matter.
It's actually funny that it recognizes its tires, like it misses them.

It petered out. More is predicted for today. You must keep in mind that Albuquerque is at an altitude varying from 5000' to around 6500' with the Sandia Mts to the east reaching nearly 11,000'. We get mountain snows throughout the winter. Here's a picture from Dec. 29th last year when 16" fell in 24 hours:

The pressure system is in the valve itself. So, given I swapped my 18"chrome rims for black steel 16" "winter" rims, the valves remain in the garage on the original rims.
What really annoys me is the lack of forethought they've put in the system. There should have been a switch in the user preferences to turn the system off. It's a totally common thing to do to swap rims in winter.

We had our first snow fall, about 4 inches in southern minnesota. I am now looking into winter tires. I was having a hard time driving in the snow. I couldn't get out of my subdivision this morning and yesterday morning. I am calling the dealer right now to ask what the difference in tires is between my moms and mine. Would there be a difference in tires offered on vehicles sold in Minnesota vs ones sold in Florida?

Can't say for sure, but I have the Firestones and for being "All-season", I'm thinking "Three-season" would be closer. If I had to deal with snow [more than I do] they would have been gone before another winter came. There are much better All-season tires out there that are truly "All-season".

You're probably unlikely to find good snow tires in Florida. Though you'll probably find hybrid tires often labeled "mud & snow". They're basically the same kind of thread as snow tires but generally have a slightly firmer compound which wear less than snow tires on asphalt.
The downside is that they dont offer as good of a grip on ice as good snow tires.

Does Dodge put different tires on their vehicles depending on where they are sold? My dilema is, I bought the Caliber when I was living in Florida. I had to come back to Minnesota for 6 months or so due to unforeseen circumstances. I didn't plan on driving in the snow. Otherwise I may have decided to go with AWD or something, or (i am ashamed to say this) a diff car. (though still would have been Dodge or Chrysler). I don't really want to give up on my Caliber, but I am making sure I have all my facts together before I go and stick 400.00 into winter tires, when I may have to do something different. Does anyone have a 5spd in snow? How does it handle? Any tips for me? I really like my Cali, and want to keep it, as this will be my only winter (hopefully).

FWD vehicles do great in snow if they have good tires. And yes, car manufacturers will vary tire brands depending on location for price/availability issues and, most importantly, suitability of climate/road conditions.
Good snow tires are generally around 500$ and they're worth that.

Thanks mouser. That is the answer I have been trying to get out of my local dealership but they couldn't answer me. I guess I am tire shopping. Didn't really want to spend the money, but if it will make a world of difference, then I will do it.
Now a question to everyone. I have bought tires in the past from Sams Club, and have been extremely happy, since I can get assistance from any Sams or Walmart that has a tire center which is most of them.
I have a sears in town, plus a Tires Plus (but I have had bad experience in past with them. Anyone on Sears?
I will do a search later on about snow tires, and I know there is extensive. When I get home I will post what tires I actually have on my Cali currently.

My brother is going to buy my moms calier when her lease is up and she is going to get either another one or a 300, depending on if she can afford it, so he is going to buy my rims off of me int he spring, and I will buy new rims and remount my other tires on them. The blizzaks may fit your needs "if" you plan on using them for 1 winter, then as an all year tire without any further winters. Don't take this wrong, you'll enjoy this winter with them, but if you are going to drive with them all year round, they wear off their winter stickness on dry roads by the next winter.

Yeah. ABS are weird the first time you try them. Probably one reason why people have hated them for so long.
On my 96 Sunfire, it had first-gen low-cost ABS from GM. The break pedal would actually kick back. First time it happen made me jump my foot off the pedal. Totally odd feeling.
My GMC Safari's ABS were much more refined. Less kickback and more rapid response, but still, you could feel it in the pedal.
On my Caliber, I can still feel a vibration in the pedal but nothing like previous cars. Just remember the 3 S of ABS:
Stomp
Stay
Steer

Surely, my wife is notthe only one to have gotten stuck and had to be towed out(doesn't mean a tow truck, a strap is also towed out) or am I the only one honest enough to say it? I saw one post, couldn't get out of the subdivision, somewhere was had to get pulled out by a neighbor...
I will confes, the first time, even the 4x4 truck got stuck... but yesterday, it did something funky, after getting stuck, it acted like it had no power, wouldn't rev, nothing after I pulled it out of the snow. Also, the snow it got stuck in wasn't really all that bad. I thought maybe the CVT trans had failed, because it simply wouldn't move with nothing to hinder it. Is there a traction control on the FWD that doesn't get indicated or something? After keeping trying out on the clean, hardsurfaced road, it finally went, and is doing fine. But last night when it was stuck, it wouldn't even try. I am not impressed with the CVT, no rpm control at all...You either scream it, or idle it, no in between when stuck, or trying to get through the snow. The snow I deal with also is drifted, not just precipitated. The big tires are also a detriment, this thing is more helpless than my 94 Voyager FWD. A lot less stable on ice as well.

First winter with my Caliber - traded a 99 V70GLT Volvo that was a tank. I leased so did not get the all wheel drive option since I never had a problem with front wheel drive in the past. In central MA have many hills and snow covered roads that don't have city sewer lines to keep the roads clear. So it's been interesting - slow and steady but find that the standard tires are not the best. If I owned the car I would buy rims with snows - had the same set up on my Volvo and never had a problem. Still trying to figure out the auto stick when driving in the snow! The last 10" storm that was slush and plowed road ways but experienced a hard time even moving along. When driving slow tried to engage the auto stick and it did not want to go into low gear so I was not sure if the "car was taking over"! Any suggestions? Thanks

The SE comes with 15" rims so if the brakes are the same as an SXT which has 17" rims, I'll be the using 15"s for winter. I've been given 15" rims off a pontiac transport free and they fit. So I'll be getting P205/70/r15 snows which also less than larger rims. However I will take a closer look at the brakes to see if all is good first. By the way these cars are pretty good in the snow with the original Firestones so I'll take my time getting snows. And that's my 2 cents.......

My Goodyear Tires | Find The Right Tire | Display | Assurance TripleTred (http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyeartireselector/display_tire.jsp?prodline=Assurance+TripleTred&mrktarea=Passenger&size=P215%2F60R17&sidewall=VSB), are the best (IMO) so far. I now love to drive in the snow.

No problems here. And it's -20º as well. Yes there is some sliding but if everyone slows down it's OK. Could use the car to provide more heat faster. Engine runs cool too.

Third winter for these in a "H" speed rated 225-60-17" size, still have exellent ice grip and quieter than the stock Firestones.

It's not really about getting stuck, it's about sliding head on into a 18 wheeler on a slight curve that scares me.
This is my first front driver in years and will be my last because even with 4 snows I find the lateral movement of the front end downright dangerous.
I feel safer with the rear end fishtailing than with the front sliding toward a ditch every time you give it gas.
RWD or AWD for me next time, Front Wheel Drive SUCKS!!!!!
On the CSRT/4 it must SUCK X 2!!!!!

MY R/T AWD handles anything mother nature can throw at it with no problem. One of the first purchases i made after getting my Cali in August of 07 was to purchase a package from the tirerack. I went with the Motegi SX5 black with polished lip, and a set of Blizzak WS50 205/70/15 winter tires. This is my second season with this combo and i couldn't be happier with the way my cali drives in the white stuff.

It's been a bad winter for me. Those piece of junk original tires-worn out with 21K. I have had a very difficult time finding replacement tires that are well rated, and 18". I am driving the Ford 500 today to guarantee a trip to the school. (cuts in road maintenance due to decreased tax revenues and we are past the snowfall amount mid-January that we received all last year!) BUT I still love my Caliber (I'm just mad at it right now.)

Hey all, it's all work and no play for me, unless I'm in my Caliber that is... 15" of the white stuff dropped on my mountain top yesterday, R/T AWD still gets it done. Love those heated seats! L8r.
