I don't recall anyone calling it that. I have had people call it an SUV before and also a gas guzzler.

In U.S. News Rankings & Reviews Car Rankings: Affordable Compact Wagons

#5 is 2009 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The Dodge Caliber is classed as a Hatchback though I fail to see a vast difference between these two.

Hatchbacks

#23 = 2009 Dodge Caliber

i had a friend who was thinking of buying a caliber, i told him it was a womans car and he wouldn't like it so he went and got a seat leon fr instead. then i seen one in a park and i was amazed, i wanted one, i thought it looked so different and cool. so i traded my impreza in for one, kind of needed something bigger for the baby anyway. my friend was fairly pissed when he seen that i bought one, i just said '' ah you wouldn't like it ha!'':Na_Na_Na_Na:

The state of Pennsylvania, and my insurance company call it a station wagon.

Yeah, its a lot "cooler" than the Escort wagon I replaced, but to me it is still more or less a crossover/wagon type of vehicle.

So, what is the stigma of being called a station wagon anyway?

Calliber again ahead of the curve ...

USA Today: Hatchbacks are making a comeback, driven by a push to roomy, fuel-efficient alternatives to crossovers or bigger cars.

Sales of hatchbacks from all brands increased 63% from the 2006 to the 2010 model years, says Ford Motor, citing data from Ward's Automotive. By comparison, total car sales fell 21% in the same period.

Ford officials say 43% of buyers opt for hatchback versions of its Focus compact, instead of the sedan. "A surprising number of people are taking the Fiesta hatch," says Robert Parker, group marketing manager for Ford.

Hyundai expects 40% of sales of the new version of its Accent subcompact, which just arrived in showrooms, to be hatchbacks.
Chevrolet's new smallest car, the Sonic, will come in a hatch version.
Kia says its recently introduced Forte hatchback is beating expectations.
Hybrids: the Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric and Toyota Prius hybrid are hatchbacks.

The hatchback — a car with a top-hinged rear door, or hatch, instead of a separate trunk — has for years been held in such low esteem by buyers that automakers invented euphemisms to describe them, if they offered them at all. Only recently have automakers started calling them hatchbacks again. For years, they tried to foist them on buyers as fastbacks, five-doors, liftbacks or other terms

•Luxury touches. Hatchbacks sold to college students of the 1970s and 1980s were often the cheapest cars on the lot. Now, they're being packed with features at least equal to their sedan stablemates. "The hatch used to be the lowest common denominator, and now, they are making them more premium," says George Peterson, president of consultant AutoPacific.

•Better looks. The hatchback of yore sometimes looked like a lopped-off sedan. Now, they are getting swoopier, more distinctive styling.

•Enhanced security. One of the biggest knocks on hatchbacks used to be that thieves could see luggage or other valuables in back. Today's hatchbacks all have built-in covers.

Re: Aleks post above:

In my opinion, a hatch is a very practical and useful vehicle - I like 'em (obviously)

The old "station wagon" is dead, mini vans are big and ugly, SUV's seem to be on their way out.

So the hatchback/compact crossover fills the void with nice styling, and practical usefulness.

When i look at the "trunk" of my sister's Focus, I know why I needed a Caliber to replace my aging Escort Wagon (yeah, a real station wagon in miniature).

Also - just my opinion - sedans are for dull, boring mundane people that are afraid to "think out of the box".

I can kind of agree with that. Honestly I prefer the added versatility and looks. The one gripe I do have about some hatchbacks is sometimes the hatch can come in contact with loads carried on a roof rack. The Caliber really doesn't have this issue unless you have a crazy long roof box though.
